How Do Animals
See the World? - In the Footsteps of Painter Franz Marc
An evening talk and morning workshop with
Jan Kees Saltet and Craig Holdrege. "I never have the
desire to paint animals as I see them, but as they arehow
they themselves see the world and feel their existence."
With these words Franz Marc (1880 to 1916) characterizes
his aim to express truly something of an animal's nature
in his boldly colored, dynamic paintings. In this talk and
workshop we will follow Marc's trackhow he as an artist
worked to reveal the animal world. This path leads to an
appreciation of Marc's intensive efforts in less than a
decade (he was killed in WWI) to find a new approach to
painting together with his Expressionist colleagues, and
also provides a key to opening up a new way of looking at
animals. The workshop will include drawing exercises and
working with oil pastels in the style of a Marc painting.
No experience necessary! The talk is on Friday, Sept. 24
at 7:30 p.m.; the workshop is on Saturday, Sept. 25 from
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (workshop fee: $25; $20 for Friends,
seniors and students; materials included). Please pre-register
for the workshop (518-672-0116; info@natureinstitute.org).
