The Nature of Drama and the Drama of Nature

(Art is nature's worthiest interpreter - Goethe)

A talk on the language of gesture in art and nature by Slava Rozentuller; Friday, September 10th at 7:30 p.m. We can approach the world's forms as dead structures. (This is the way of quantitative science.) We can also approach them imaginatively as the work of shaping forces. (This was the way of Goethe the scientist.) And we can, further, approach every gesture in nature as if we were conversing with the soul of nature. (This was the way of Goethe the poet.) At the juncture of art and science, the poet strives to create, out of deepest feeling, an image that is an inspired revelation of nature, while the scientist strives, through seeing and imagination, to grasp systematically the particular ideas at work in what is revealed. There is then a marriage of feeling and understanding, where both are essential to our full participation in the being of nature.
