Sounds of the Wild
August 11-12
Weekend workshop with David Rothenberg
Saturday, 9 a.m. to Sunday noon, at The Nature Institute
In August David Rothenberg will be back at The Nature Institute. He will offer a weekend workshop that will lead participants into the landscape to tune themselves to the vast possibilities of natural music. As he showed in his recent talk “Why Birds Sing,” David weds the finely tuned ear of a musician with the passionate interest of a naturalist. In this workshop he will lead participants out into the field and guide them in listening to nature’s sounds at different times of day and in different habitats. You will learn the form and beauty of the sounds of birds, insects, wind, and leaves, and return from the field to make your own work out of what you have heard. How can we characterize a habitat by its sounds? What qualities do the sounds of the environment reveal to us? How can we sense the music inherent in nature, and weave its forms into our own creations?
The workshop will begin at 9am on Saturday, August 11, and run until noon on Sunday, August 12.
The fee is $120; please register by the end of July. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments.
Register by calling The Nature Institute at 518-672-0116 or by email info@natureinstitute.org
